I use an integrative approach to pull from interpersonal, intrapersonal, and supportive therapies, and utilize evidence-based interventions. Examples include: screening (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7, ACE), cognitive therapy, behavioral therapy, behavioral activation, humanistic and supportive therapies, trauma-informed care, motivational interviewing, strengths-based, emotion-focused therapy, interpersonal therapy, narrative therapy, positive psychology, solution-focused brief therapy (SFBT), Adlerian, Gestalt, multicultural, culturally responsive, and existential.

My Focus

I offer individual counseling services for adults (18–60 years old), specializing in life management, crisis intervention, and stress management. I work with high-achieving individuals and those navigating life transitions, helping you manage stress, anxiety, and the pressures of balancing personal, professional, and relational demands.

**While I work with clients who have experienced childhood and adult trauma, my approach is present-focused. I will help you recognize how current behaviors, emotional patterns, or responses are connected to past trauma — but I do not use therapy sessions to revisit or retell traumatic events in detail.**

If you're looking for a space to process or explore trauma narratives (i.e., deep dive), my approach will not be the right fit. This is clearly discussed during the consultation call to ensure our work together is aligned with your needs and goals.

Common concerns I support include:
General and work-related stress, adjustment disorders, anxiety, depression, mood disorders, racial and cultural trauma, discrimination, relationship challenges, obsessive thoughts or behaviors, trauma, intimacy issues, identity development, and the challenges of adulting.

Specialty Areas:
• Complex Stress
• Thinking Disorders
• Emotional Dysregulation & Inhibited Responses

I use an integrative, evidence-based approach tailored to your unique needs. My goal is to help you move forward — not by reliving the past, but by understanding how it shows up in your present and building new, healthier patterns. Whether you're navigating the lasting effects of trauma or working toward greater self-worth, I'm here to support your journey with clarity, purpose, and direction.

My Communication Style

I am straightforward to challenge clients for optimal growth. I do not sugar-coat or fluff. You will always be in the know about what we're working on (i.e., treatment goals) and my assessment of your progress in treatment. You will not have to guess anything. I will ask if you want my feedback and opinions, especially if I feel you are not ready to address something meaningful to be of help to you. I also do not use psychological jargon or fad mental health language.

My Journey to Mental Healthcare

I was driven to the work by wanting to make a difference. Growing up, I had close family members who suffered from debilitating chronic mental health conditions. They sought treatment within the mental healthcare system but received poor-quality care and encountered insensitive providers. I wanted to do better. It was my mission to help individuals with mental health needs by treating them with respect and dignity, while also helping them to have a quality of life.

The Goal Setting Process

Goal-setting is a collaborative and ongoing part of the therapeutic process. During our consultation call and initial intake session, we’ll discuss your expectations for therapy and work together to establish your initial treatment goals. These goals are not fixed — they can and should evolve as therapy progresses and your needs shift.

**Between sessions, you’ll be asked to complete tasks or reflections designed to reinforce the work we’re doing in-session. These out-of-session assignments are essential for real-world application and often hold more impact than the session itself. Growth happens not just in conversation, but in practice.**

If you’re not open to engaging in this kind of active, between-session work, my approach will not be the right fit for you. My goal is to help you make meaningful, lasting changes — and that requires commitment both in and outside of the therapy room.

Type of Session

All sessions are telehealth meaning online via videoconferencing software (e.g., Zoom). If technical difficulties, sessions can continue by phone.

Scheduling an Appointment

Before scheduling an appointment, Dr. Pinkney requires a consult call; calls are free to last about 20 minutes. Calls are via telephone, not video conferencing. During the call, Dr. Pinkney will ask for a brief description of what brings you to seek out counseling, therapy history, about your expectations, initial goals, and she will tell you more about her approach. Dr. Pinkney will also clarify between employee assistance program (EAP) benefits, which require a brief therapy approach compared to outpatient mental health services. If using EAP benefits, have your EAP code and the name of the company that provides your benefits available during the call. If you do not, and want to schedule an appointment, you will not be able to do so until you have this information. Feel free to contact Dr. Pinkney preferably via email to schedule a consult call at your convenience.
